Functional Medicine today has roots in orthomolecular medicine practices during the 1960’s. The Greek –ortho means ‘correct’ so orthomolecular literally means the ‘right molecule’ and is the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of substances which are natural to the body. Orthomolecular medicine was founded in part by biochemistry researcher Linus Pauling, Phd and derives much of its theories from basic bioscience. The founder of Functional Medicine, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, was a chemist who worked directly with Dr. Pauling and used Dr. Pauling’s tenets of orthomolecular medicine as a foundation for Functional Medicine. Functional medicine expects a certain level of knowledge of biochemistry, cell physiology, molecular genetics and its connection to the mechanisms of disease. It attempts to explore the underlying needs of the patient using a systems-oriented approach. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine to better address the healthcare needs of the 21st century.
Functional Medicine emphasizes the healing of physical processes rather than ridding the patient of symptoms alone. Functional Medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease using patient-centered care. By listening to the patient and learning their individual story, the physician can customize care to treat each patient’s unique needs. It is an integration of science-based healthcare approach in which the physician considers a number of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, lifestyle, genetic makeup, mind, and environment that can contribute to illness. Functional Medicine integrates traditional Western medical practice with a focus on prevention and support. Using laboratory testing and other diagnostic procedures, a comprehensive plan is developed for the patient which may include hormonal balancing, medications, botanicals, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, stress management techniques, and emotional support.
